Karen Tankard

Biography

Karen Tankard earned a Master of Arts in Liberal Studies from Simon Fraser University in 2008. She also holds a Diploma of Technology in Broadcast Communications from BCIT, a Graduate Diploma in Professional Communications Management from Royal Roads University (2010) and a Bachelor of General Studies in English and Sociology from SFU.

Karen teaches communications at the undergraduate level at University Canada West. She uses real life examples and storytelling to explain ideas and concepts and encourage discussion. Karen loves technology and is always incorporating new digital tools into her courses.

Expertise and Experience

Karen was a CBC News reporter, producer and announcer for radio, TV, digital operations for more than two decades (1989 - 2011). She is an accomplished digital campaigner and content creator, and a skilled social and traditional media communicator. She is a communications professor and digital media instructor and is a knowledgeable multi-platform writer and photographer.

She worked with Non-Profit Organization in Digital Campaigns, as a Communications Specialist and a Communications Officer.

Karen teaches in the School of Business at BCIT in broadcast communications and digital media. She has lectured at Langara, SFU and Kwantlen University.

Awards

Karen is the winner of a Jack Webster Journalism Award and numerous awards from the Radio Television Digital News Association of Canada. She is also a judge of the prestigious Jack Webster Journalism Awards.

Her areas of interest are data privacy, the future of journalism, media manipulation and fake news, and online communities.
