Instructional and Faculty Support and Resources

UCW Wise is our institutional repository. The repository was designed to be an open-access space to showcase, share, and increase the usage and visibility of the work produced by UCW students, faculty, staff and alumni.

The collection focuses on the institution’s scholarly materials and research output, as well as institutional reports and documents. All items added to the repository are contributed with the explicit permission of the author/creator or when permitted under copyright law.

Why Does Wise Promote Open Access?

Maintaining the continued accessibility of these materials and increasing the usage and visibility of our community’s work is a priority for the library. The collection is also part of the larger network of ARCA repositories.

What is OER?

Open educational resources (OER) are teaching, learning, and research materials that have been published under an open license, making them free for the public to access, use, and share. OER include open textbooks, open access books and journals, open courses, open data, and more!

The most familiar type of OER are open textbooks, which offer free-to-access course readings for students and instructors. Open textbooks help reduce students’ financial barriers to education and increase equitable access to information. Because open licenses often give users permission to adapt and remix published content, open textbooks also afford instructors greater flexibility over their course materials.

OER at University Canada West

As of 2019, UCW has been making strides to support open education and resources. The Open Educational Resource Committee (OERC) was formed in November 2019 and supports OER adoption by:

  • Educating stakeholders about the benefits of OER
  • Advocating for use of OER on campus and supporting faculty in adopting OER (including funded initiatives such as the Zero Cost Textbook Initiative
  • Facilitating OER events such as workshops or information sessions
  • Making collaborative decisions about OER policy at UCW

The OERC also publishes annual reports with highlights of the efforts happening across the institution:
