Our Commitment To Equity, Diversity And Inclusion (EDI)
"Diversity is our strength. Inclusion is our mandate," Dr. Bashir Makhoul, President & Vice-Chancellor
At University Canada West, we are dedicated to nurturing a diverse, equitable and inclusive community where all individuals are respected, valued and empowered to thrive. We recognize that diversity encompasses a wide range of identities and experiences, including but not limited to race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, socio-economic background, age, religion and disability.
We are committed to providing equal opportunities for all members of our community, irrespective of their backgrounds or circumstances. Our actions are guided by a profound respect for the dignity, rights and full participation of every individual. We acknowledge the historical and systemic barriers that have marginalized certain groups, including Indigenous peoples, and strive to create a culture of belonging and equitable access to opportunities and resources.
Diversity is not only celebrated, but also actively promoted by our Community Engagement team across our university campuses and institutional culture. We continually assess our progress towards our DEI goals, incorporate feedback from our community and implement specific benchmarks to ensure accountability. We understand that achieving true equity requires ongoing effort and we are committed to evolve our policies and practices accordingly.
By championing diversity, equity and inclusion, we can create a truly inclusive university environment where every individual feels respected, valued, and empowered to succeed.
Diversity at UCW
UCW launched its inaugural Employee Diversity Census in 2024 to capture the demographic composition of the university’s workforce. Conducted annually, the census is administered and managed by the Office of Institutional Accountability, with support from People and Culture (Human Resources, to serve multiple purposes:
• To provide a baseline understanding of UCW workforce representation
• To meet mandatory reporting requirements such as the Pay Transparency Report
• To inform ongoing institutional initiatives that promote equity and inclusion

Pay Transparency
We apply a gender-neutral job evaluation system to define the scale of a role by examining its organizational impact, analytical problem solving and complexity.
We consider various ways candidates develop expertise such as, education, years of experience and transferrable skills when determining compensation. The determined salary ranges are posted for all positions.
We are committed to taking appropriate actions to close pay gaps where they exist on the Pay Transparency report.
