Online Bachelor of Commerce

The online Bachelor of Commerce (BCom) will provide you with a broad foundation knowledge of contemporary business and its practices. Based in Vancouver, Canada, this ACBSP-accredited degree prepares you for a successful career in business or management, where you will contribute constructively to a global economy.

UCW’s online BCom program has also received the NCMA designation from CIM | Chartered Managers Canada.

Students currently enrolled in the online BCom program are entitled to a free Associate Membership with the association, giving UCW students the chance to belong to Canada’s chartered management and leadership association while earning their degree.

Associate Members can participate in all the networking and professional development opportunities the association offers, helping them get ready for their new career after they graduate.

Graduates of the BCom program will:

  • Asynchronous, self-paced learning so you can study around your work, family and busy life.

  • All course materials are made available at the start of term, except exams & quizzes, so students can manage their time and plan accordingly

Attendance
  • Weeks 1-10: Students access course content online and complete tasks

  • Weeks 11-12: Students complete review activities and final assessments (examinations)

  • Instructors consider student participation in forum discussions and completion of online activities when taking attendance in the MyUCW Student Portal

Participation
  • Students participate in Online Applied Interactive Activities (minimum 4 hours per week) with instructors and classmates through discussion forums and by completing other individual or group activities
Course Content
  • Syllabus provided at start of term.
  • Articulate Version of course materials plus additional items added by the instructor, textbooks, PPT slides, readings, videos, etc. in MyUCW. All course materials made available at start of term except exams & quizzes
Instructional Activities 
  • Applied Online Interactive Activities: recorded mini lectures, case studies, simulations, discussion forums, homework, assignments, tasks, projects, etc.
Interaction
  • Students can ask questions through discussion forums in MyUCW and emails to instructors, or during scheduled virtual office hours.

  • 2 hours of scheduled virtual office hours per week per course section

Assessment
  • Diversified assessments: group projects/presentations, assignments, quizzes & examinations, etc.

  • Quizzes and examinations are proctored by Examity (online invigilation platform)

  • Assignments are submitted through Turnitin for Academic Integrity

 

Areas of Focus

UCW follows professional trends in industry closely and develops course focuses that reflect the best professional standards in specific fields. Currently, we offer the following focuses in the BCom degree:

Accounting

Accounting skills are consistently in demand. The accounting focus, in combination with the rest of the BCom degree, will prepare you for entry into a professional accounting program.

To complete the Accounting focus you must, in addition to your required core courses, take:

  • ACCT 303 – Managerial Accounting II
  • ACCT 305 – Principles of Auditing and Assurance
  • ACCT 307 – Taxation
  • ACCT 401 – Strategic Managerial Accounting
Business Communications

Communication is an essential component of every organization, whether communicating internally to staff and managers, or externally to customers, stakeholders, or the public. The Business Communications focus will prepare you to produce effective communications materials for a wide range of contexts and in the framework of business strategy.

To complete the Business Communications focus you must, in addition to your core required courses, take:

  • COMM 304 – Social Media
  • PUBR 300 – Public Relations in Practice and Theory
  • PUBR 308 – Persuasive Presentations
  • MRKT 302 – Integrated Marketing Communications
  • COMM 410 – Communication Strategy

 

 

 

Course Coverage for CPA Programs

University Canada West has an articulation agreement with the Chartered Professional Accounts of British Columbia and students can transfer UCW credits to the CPA Professional Education Program for some courses.

Students who are missing one or more of the required courses for direct admission into the Chartered Professional Accountants Professional Education Program (CPA PEP) can complete the equivalent coursework at University of Canada West.

A list of specific CPA prerequisite requirements that University of Canada West students may be exempt from taking if they have the completed courses at UCW can be found here.

 

Academic Standing

Students must remain in Good Academic Standing to continue their studies at UCW. To remain in Good Academic Standing, undergraduate students must maintain a 2.00 Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA). For full details about Academic Standing, refer to the current Academic Calendar here.

 

Course Structure

The Bachelor of Commerce (BCom) provides you with a broad foundation of contemporary business knowledge and practices. Its courses are designed to provide a breadth of business perspective and skills, building your core skills in writing, research, and team performance.

Entry Requirements

  • Canadian High School (Grade 12) diploma or equivalent with an overall average of C or better (2.0 on a 4.33 scale)

OR

  • Twenty-one (21) years of age or older and out of high school for at least two years, and documented success through academic, professional or volunteer activities

AND

  • Academic IELTS - 6.5 or better with a minimum of 6.0 in the writing band, or equivalent (for students whose first language is not English). More information is available in the English Proficiency section of this website.

You can complete the English pathway courses (University Access Program) in order to meet the English proficiency requirements of the Bachelor of Commerce program.
