Dr. Ananya Roy earned a PhD in Mass Communication from University of Florida, USA in 2015, a Master’s degree in Communication Studies from Nanyang Technological University, Singapore in 2008, and a Post-Graduate Diploma in Journalism (English, Print) from the Indian Institute of Mass Communication, New Delhi, India in 2003. She earned a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Delhi University, India in 2001. Recently, she also completed a Post-Graduate Diploma in Environmental Law and Policy from National Law University, Delhi and World Wide Fund (WWF), India.

Dr. Roy employs active and experiential learning to engage students. She constantly tries to learn about emerging nuances in communication theory and practice, and integrates the same in her classes, encouraging debate and discussions. Dr. Roy teaches Communication Theory, Current Issues in Communication and Media, and Mass Media and Society courses at UCW.

Ananya speaks English, Hindi and Bengali.

Expertise and Experience

Before coming to Canada, Ananya taught Communication Research Methods, Communication Theory, Development Communication, Race, Gender and Class in the Media, and Mobile Media and Apps to graduate and undergraduate students in India and USA. As a research consultant, she led and managed national-level monitoring and evaluation projects in India and collaborated with international organizations to design and implement research initiatives. As a former business journalist in Singapore and India, she provided in-depth reporting and analyses of economic issues, translating complex financial concepts into accessible and engaging content for audiences.

Publications and Scholarly Activity

She has presented papers at both international and national conferences, edited journal articles and published papers/articles in academic journals, books, newspapers and magazines. Dr. Roy’s research focuses mainly on the role of information and communication technologies in providing accessibility to news, current affairs, and development initiatives to marginalized communities. Awards

Dr. Roy was one of the two CJC recipients of the University of Florida’s prestigious Graduate School Fellowship from 2011 to 2015. She was also awarded the Best Employee Award by the Indian Institute of Mass Communication, Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Government of India, in 2018.
