Artificial intelligence is changing how organizations make decisions, manage projects, serve customers and develop new products and services. As its use grows, organizations need leaders who understand not only what AI can do, but how to apply it responsibly and effectively.

University Canada West’s Master of Business Administration (MBA) offers a specialization in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning Leadership for students who want to develop business and leadership skills for an AI-enabled workplace.

Rather than training students to become software developers or data scientists, the specialization focuses on applying AI in business, leading technology-enabled projects and managing interdisciplinary and technical teams.

What is an MBA specialization in AI and Machine Learning Leadership?

An MBA in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning Leadership combines the broad business education of an MBA with focused study in the application and management of AI.

At UCW, Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning Leadership is a specialization within the MBA, not a separate technical artificial intelligence degree. Students complete the MBA curriculum while taking three specialization courses focused on AI applications, project leadership and leading technical professionals.

That distinction matters. A technical master’s degree in artificial intelligence or machine learning may focus heavily on programming, algorithms and developing AI models. UCW’s specialization approaches AI primarily from a business and leadership perspective.

Students examine how AI can be applied to business challenges, how technology-enabled projects can be managed and how leaders can work effectively with people from technical and STEM backgrounds.

What will you study?

The specialization consists of three courses completed as part of UCW’s MBA program.

Application of AI in Business

BUSI 654 – Application of AI in Business explores how artificial intelligence can be applied across different areas of an organization.

Students examine applications in areas such as marketing, finance, strategy, operations, human resources, sustainability and product development. They also work with AI tools and consider their practical use in business environments.

The focus is not simply on what AI technology can do, but on when and how it can support business objectives and organizational decision-making.

Advanced Projects Leadership

MGMT 654 – Advanced Projects Leadership combines project management principles with the challenges involved in AI and machine learning projects.

Students examine project scope, scheduling, risk and cost management while developing leadership skills for projects involving emerging technologies. The course also emphasizes collaboration, interdisciplinary teams and decision-making in environments where technologies and requirements can change quickly.

STEM Professionals Leadership

MGMT 656 – STEM Professionals Leadership focuses on leading and managing professionals working in science, technology, engineering and related fields.

Students consider the particular challenges involved in leading technical teams, including communication, strategic decision-making and fostering innovation. Practical exercises and case studies help students develop approaches for working with professionals whose technical expertise may differ from their own.

Together, the three courses give students a business-focused understanding of AI alongside skills in project and technical-team leadership.

From AI tools to leadership skills

Applied learning is a key part of the specialization. Students work with real-world case studies, Riipen industry projects, consulting simulations, hands-on AI activities and professional scenarios.

They also gain experience with generative AI platforms and other emerging technologies used in contemporary organizations, including:

  • ChatGPT
  • Google Gemini
  • Microsoft Copilot
  • AI assistants and AI-enabled workflows
  • Intelligent automation tools

Students develop prompt-engineering techniques and learn to consider the capabilities, limitations and ethical implications of generative AI systems.

The goal is not technical specialization for its own sake. It is to build the practical literacy needed to assess AI tools, understand their business implications and make informed decisions about their use.

Students can also develop skills in areas such as:

  • AI strategy and decision-making: evaluating opportunities to use AI and considering how they align with organizational goals
  • AI project leadership: helping plan and lead technology-enabled projects while considering scope, timelines, cost and risk
  • Leadership of technical teams: communicating and working effectively with professionals from technology, engineering and other STEM fields
  • Responsible AI leadership: considering ethical questions and organizational risks connected to AI adoption
  • Change and innovation management: helping organizations adapt as emerging technologies change processes and ways of working

These skills can help business professionals contribute to AI-related initiatives without requiring them to become AI developers themselves.

Who is the specialization for?

The Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning Leadership specialization may be relevant to students who want to work at the intersection of business, technology and artificial intelligence.

This can include aspiring managers, project leaders, consultants, entrepreneurs and business professionals who want to lead AI-enabled initiatives, manage interdisciplinary teams or contribute to digital and organizational transformation.

Students do not need an additional technical qualification to enter the specialization. The AI, machine learning and leadership concepts required for the specialization are taught within the MBA.

Previous exposure to business, technology or quantitative analysis may be useful, but the program is designed for students from a range of academic and professional backgrounds.

Career pathways and the future of AI leadership

As organizations adopt AI, they need people who can connect technology with business needs, manage implementation and communicate across technical and non-technical teams.

Graduates of the specialization may apply their knowledge in areas such as:

  • AI Project Manager
  • Advanced Projects Leader
  • Technical Team Leader
  • STEM Manager
  • AI Strategy Consultant
  • Innovation Manager
  • Technology Consultant
  • Change Management
  • AI Ethics Leadership

Career opportunities will depend on a graduate’s previous education, professional experience and other qualifications. The specialization provides a foundation for work involving AI-enabled projects, technology leadership and organizational transformation rather than preparing students for purely technical roles such as machine learning engineer or data scientist.

UCW’s approach also allows students to develop this focused knowledge within a broader MBA. The University’s MBA has earned ACBSP Global Business Accreditation, and the Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning Leadership specialization is completed within the standard MBA program.

For students comparing MBA programs in British Columbia, it offers an opportunity to combine core business education with focused study of one of the most significant technologies affecting contemporary organizations.

Preparing to lead in an AI-enabled workplace

Artificial intelligence may be a technology, but many of the challenges surrounding its adoption are ultimately business and leadership challenges.

Organizations need people who can determine where AI may add value, assess risks, manage projects and work effectively with technical specialists.

UCW’s MBA specialization in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning Leadership is designed around that intersection. By combining the broader foundation of an MBA with focused study in AI applications, advanced project leadership and STEM team leadership, students can develop skills for managing technology-enabled change.
