Yasamin Alami

Biography:

Yasamin Alami has a Master of Professional Accounting from the University of Saskatchewan, a Bachelor of Arts in International Banking and Finance from the University of Applied Sciences BFI Vienna in Austria, a Bachelor of Technology in Accounting from BCIT and a Diploma of Financial Management from BCIT. She is a Chartered Professional Accountant.

Yasamin is currently an Assistant Professor at University Canada West teaching Accounting for Managers.

She is a firm believer that people learn by doing, especially with financial and managerial accounting, which has so many details and nuances in the processes that students are learning. She incorporates the flipped classroom and guided learning models by providing students with walkthrough videos and exercises prior to on-campus class time and follows it up with hands-on experiences and real life tie throughs to ensure what students are learning is translated to today’s work world and they have a chance to understand the material and learn to work with it.

Through participation, encouragement and real-life application, Yasamin ensures her class is as current and applicable as possible for students’ future careers in all realms of business.

Expertise and Experience

Yasamin articled at a variety of mid-sized public practice firms in Vancouver, specializing in public company audits and corporate taxes. She has experience in a variety of industries including mining, oil and gas, technology and once legalized publicly traded cannabis companies. She worked her way up the ranks from junior to intermediate and senior accountant, obtaining valuable experience as a manager and juggling work with teaching part-time at Yorkville University.

She now teaches full time at UCW and part time BCIT and the CPA Western School of Business.

At UCW, she is also an elected Faculty Engagement Committee member, a mentor for new faculty who join the university, a course lead and active member on the Pilot Marker Program.

Publications and Scholarly Activity

Yasamin’s research areas of interest include applications of technology in academia and the workplace, different management styles and what good management looks like. She is fascinated by shareholder behaviour and the psychology of business.
