Maryam Safa Schneider
Biography:
Maryam Safa Schneider has a Master of Liberal Arts, Psychology, from Harvard Extension School and a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of British Columbia. She was an early adopter of online education and received a certificate of virtual teaching from the University of California in 2016.
Experience and Expertise
Maryam combined her knowledge of humanities and arts with language instruction after completing a Cambridge teacher training program and practicum. She then designed and taught a wide range of creative and academic courses at the International Language Schools of Canada in Vancouver for more than a decade. She also taught English for Academic Purposes to newcomers at Vancouver Community College and Acsenda School of Management. Since 2007, she’s had the privilege of helping over 5,000 adult students from a multitude of backgrounds achieve their language and academic goals. In addition to teaching, she mentored teacher trainees during their practicum at Greystone College.
She implements adult learning principles and learner-centred approaches in her instruction and is a strong proponent of Holistic education.
Publications and Scholarly Activity
In recent years, Maryam has engaged in research and education focused on mental health. During the pandemic, she worked with small businesses in British Columbia and designed an online program offering employees virtual psychoeducational lessons and social activities to lower stress and prevent burnout. This project is now a capstone exemplar at Harvard Extension School. She also conducted qualitative research via Dalhousie university focused on the impact of environmental disasters and community support on mental health.
