
Dr. Melissa Rui Wan
Dr. Melissa Rui Wan graduated with a PhD in Economics from the University of Calgary (2008-2014). She holds a Master degree in Economics from the National University of Singapore (2008) and a Bachelor degree in Public Finance from Xi’an Jiaotong University (2005).
Dr. Wan is currently an Assistant Professor at University Canada West teaching economics.
Expertise and Experience
Dr. Wan has years of experience teaching courses such as Introduction to Economics, Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, International Financial Management, International Trade, Environmental Economics, Canadian Public Finance, and The Global Trading System. She taught at the Coquitlam College, Douglas College and Simon Fraser University before joining University Canada West in 2025.
Dr. Wan believes that economics is the study of the real world. Her goal as a teacher is to guide students to apply what they have learned from the class not only to economics but also to their lives beyond the school.
Publications and Scholarly Activity
Dr. Wan’s main research stream focuses on the relationship between international trade and environmental quality, but further projects address issues regarding firm behaviors under different market structures, natural resource exploitation, and the environmental effects of electronic cars trade.
She has published on Resource and Energy Economics, Environmental and Resource Economics, and Review of International Economics. She has presented her research at major conferences such as CEA.
