Dr. Jie Deng
Biography:
Dr. Jie Deng has a PhD in History from Queen’s University and an MA and BA in History from Fudan University.
He is currently a Sessional Faculty member at University Canada West teaching Canadian Urban History.
Dr. Deng’s teaching draws heavily from the wisdom of two ancient philosophers: Confucius and Socrates. Confucius, who lived between 551 and 479 BC, once said that he would not reveal the truth to someone who was not eager to learn. He strives to ignite students' curiosity and enthusiasm by showing them the relevance of the past to their lives before diving into the contents. Once students are eager to learn, he often uses the Socratic method of questioning, guiding them to discover the truth for themselves by asking a series of thought-provoking questions during the lectures.
Expertise and Experience
Dr. Deng has taught history and history-related courses at several post-secondary institutes over the last 12 years including Pepperdine University (Shanghai Campus, China), Israel Institute of Technology (Shantou Campus, China) and Fudan University.
