University Canada West students in the Master of Business Administration program now take a micro-credential at the beginning of their degree program to brush up on their accounting skills.
University Canada West (UCW) launched Financial Accounting 099, which is mandatory for all MBA students.
This new micro-credential was created to help students succeed in ACCT 621–Accounting for Managers. As a foundational course, Financial Accounting 099 is designed to cover the cornerstone aspects of financial accounting.
Over the course of four weeks, students will learn accounting principles and elements that will be key in helping lay the foundation for the rest of their MBA studies. Topics covered include accounting equations, debits and credits, how to balance an account and the three major types of business reports.
Students will have several opportunities to work collaboratively in groups throughout the Financial Accounting course, helping them better understand the material through peer-to-peer learning and foster the interpersonal, communication, organizational, conflict resolution and teamwork skills they need to thrive in their careers.
This micro-credential runs concurrently with ACCT 621–Accounting for Managers.
Students who successfully pass Financial Accounting will earn a digital badge and the course will count as 5% of their grade in ACCT 621. For the Winter 2022 Term, there was no fee for this course.
“This new micro-credential will provide our students the foundational knowledge they need to succeed in their accounting course, the rest of their studies and into their careers,” said Dr. Larry Earnhart, Department Chair – MBA, Quantitative Studies.
“Our goal is to prepare our students for work in the real world, and we believe this course will do just that.”
