A self-described disruptive tech and decentralization enthusiast, Dr. Abeba N. Turi has spent most of her career in academia.

“I believe in life-long learning, and keep updating my skills regularly,” she says.

Dr. Turi has a PhD in the Digital Economy from the University of Rovira i Virgili in Spain, a Master of Science in Economics and Finance from Charles University in Prague and a bachelor’s degree in Economics from Hawassa University in Ethiopia.

She’s been a visiting researcher at the University of British Columbia, a researcher for the University of Applied Science (HES-SO) in Switzerland and an assistant researcher with the UNESCO Chair in Data Privacy in Spain. Dr. Turi has also served in various international research and teaching positions in Africa, Europe and Canada.

Dr. Turi joined University Canada West’s faculty five years ago and is currently an Associate Professor teaching Quantitative Reasoning & Analysis, Business Economics and Research.

“UCW provides a flexible work environment with a diverse group of individuals coming from both academia and industry,” she says.

Dr. Turi recently worked as a data science consultant and project manager for a local non-profit consulting with Women in Data Science at UBC. She has also started an initiative on quantitative reasoning and statistical content creation and has created a personalized coaching program targeted at beginner and intermediate-level numeracy and digital literacy.

Dr. Turi’s research interests cast a wide net, including the digital economy, fintech, decentralized finance, distributed ledger technologies and cryptonomics, as well as digital transformation, tech policy, emerging tech analysis, decentralization, emerging tech analysis and the algorithm economy.

One of her most recent works is her book, Technologies for Modern Digital Entrepreneurship, and another edited book, Financial Technologies and DeFi.

Dr. Turi’s works have been published in various peer-reviewed journals, book series and indexed conference proceedings, and she has presented at international conferences around the globe including in Canada, China, Germany, Italy, Spain and the UK.
